The Friends of the British Cemetery is responsible for the maintenance of one of the oldest British military cemeteries in Europe. The annual subscription is €10.00 or £10 per person. €20.00 or £20 for a couple. We welcome new “Friends” who agree that the maintenance of this historic site is a worthwhile objective.
Our aim is to provide a permanent place of remembrance and develop a well-secured fund to preserve the cemetery for future generations. The Friends of the British Cemetery is UK Registered Charity No. 1109395 and therefore able to benefit from the Gift Aid scheme. Donations are deposited into a Trustee-controlled fund for the restoration of the Chapel of S. João da Corujeira, adjoining the British Cemetery.
Lady Jane Wellesley, daughter of the 8th Duke of Wellington, is the patron of our Association.
A caretaker welcomes visitors to the British Cemetery, in a bastion of Elvas Castle. We very much hope you will join our Association, visit the cemetery and participate in our activities.
